The cojuelo devil = El diablo cojuelo

The devil’s lameness is one of those characteristic features, when defining his ontological imperfection. The lack of a foot, the use of crutches, the limping walk remind us that he is an imperfect being and puts him in, with other ugly and deformed specimens of classical mythology such as Vulcan. This god of the Roman pantheon is not the only reference when it comes to talking about this anatomical deformity. In fact, all those beings which are evil and arouse suspicions are gifted it: the villains of popular tales, sinister characters, representatives of pagan lands like the Queen of Sheba and Mephistopheles.
The image shown here, portrays a lame devil with a stick leg, bat’s wings and the tail of a reptile. The scene is taken from a Flemish engraving form the end of the 16th century by Johann Sadeler and shows the devil tempting Christ.
