Winter Solstice at Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, Lincel (featured in Explore)

Lincel is a village close to Saint Michel L'Observatoire which, together with Saint Michel, form the commune Saint Michel L'Observatoire - Lincel.

This photograph is of the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Lincel; it was taken at sunset on the shortest day of the year - the winter solstice.

The church was built during the 13th and 14th centuries, although there is a written reference of a church being here in 1115. It is now listed as a historic monument of France.

In addition to the windmill (center left), the plateau du Moulin à Vent is also home to Centre d’Astronomie and the Planétarium de Haute-Provence. Lincel is a village close to Saint Michel; in 1973, the two villages were joined to form the commune Saint-Michel l’Observatoire – Lincel.

The snow covered hills in the distance are the Provençal préalpes around Digne-les-Bains.

Provençale Pastorale (camel)

Originating in the 17th and 18th centuries, a Provençal pastorale is a travelling nativity play performed in and around a village, traditionally in the provençal language.

There are many different pastorales performed in Provence. Sometimes villages will present plays written and performed by themselves; however, probably the most famous pastorale is that written by Antoine Maurel in 1844.

This photograph was taken in the village of Lincel, where the Troupe de Fuveau performed their version of Maurel's four act Pastorale.

It was quite difficult to take as the light was so low that, at first, I didn't even see the camel; it was only the light on the white headscarf that caught my eye.
