One our tour group members is showing the girls she photographed what they look like. At this time digital cameras were relatively new. People in Madagascar had not seem many of these cameras and were fascinated by the images that could be shared immediately, (unfortunately we couldn't leave a print behind for each of the subjects). The faces of these girls says it all.
We stopped at the Mangero River crossing to take in the interesting sites and these two children came up with a string of fish hoping to sell us the tilapia and carp on the stinger. Children here were extremely friendly maybe because we were the oddity, but I really enjoyed the interactions with the kids here.
We were passing through Moramanga at the time schools were finishing for the day. These little carts were in heavy use as students were commuting home from school. Being white folks, we stood out, especially in our tour van and were quite the spectacle. After viewing these images when I returned from the trip, I realized the manpower was barefoot and also wondered if there was some kind of caste system in the society here because you can't help seeing the difference between the privileged children riding in the cart and the workers hauling them home.
