Christopher Hitchens (April 13, 1949 - December 15, 2011)

Fourteen years without Hitch. I posted this the night he died. I remember Galia messaging me with the news www.flickr.com/photos/adharmabum/. Got lots of favs and comments. I wrote a long essay and provided some links. I deleted all of it. Important that Hitch not be viewed as a relic. He's more relevant now than ever (Trump's second - and probably not last - term). Hitch, Carlin and Hicks are voices that are sorely missed.

So, for the uninitiated, this will do:

Martin Luther King Day 2024

A lot of people want Martin Luther King to come back. His quotes were written all over those "Your Thoughts on Black Lives Matter" banners from years ago. #MartinLutherKing #MLKDay #MLK2024

Occupy Wall Street

Thousands of people turned out into Times Square for what was billed as "The Occupation Party". The entire sidewalks and pedestrianized areas of Times Square were packed to capacity for hours. Towards the north end, police dressed in riot gear and mounted on horses arrested about 40 people. To the south, it was a more party-like atmosphere. You would've never known how different the situation was just a block or two away. A maze of police barricades made movement difficult.

Occupy Wall Street

Demonstrators staged a die-in outside the New York City headquarters of Bank of America. BoA is one of the largest funders of mountaintop removal coal mining—a particularly destructive method of coal mining that can pollute nearby rivers for 1000 years, cause serious chronic illness among residents near the operation, and, as the name suggests, remove the top of a mountain to get at the coal.
