This is Kala Namak, or Himalayan black salt. It is an unrefined, volcanic rock salt (Halite) with a sulfur-like aroma, similar to the smell of hard-boiled eggs. This salt owes its unique taste – a hint of bitterness – to the presence of Sulphur.
We were given a small vial of it (the labeled bottle in the background) by a friend who vacationed in Spain (thus the Spanish spelling of the word Salt… Sal).

The former owners of our house planted 12 rhododendrons of various colors on the property. They grow very well in Oregon, the only place I have seen better ones is in Scotland at the Inverewe Gardens at Poolewe. This pinky-purple one is our favorite for its color and multiple bloom clusters. I like it in its natural setting but also showing off on black.
