Espi Mozgat is composed of two words: “Espi” meaning “white” in the Talysh language, and “Mozgat” meaning “mosque” in the Avestan language. This structure was originally a large and ancient fire temple, which was converted into a mosque after the advent of Islam, most likely after the 3rd century AH, and remained in use for a long period. Based on the Kufic inscription and the pottery discovered at the site, the structure dates back to the Seljuk era. It was built using goat’s milk and mudbrick, and coated and decorated with lime plaster. Architectural features and the presence of pottery from the Ilkhanid period indicate that the mosque is at least 800 years old. Some accounts suggest that the structure dates back to the Sassanid era. Today, the building has been abandoned and is on the verge of collapse.
