Shirahata shrine was built by Hojo Masako on the grounds of Hachimangu in 1200 in honor of Minamoto Yoritomo and Sanetomo (not Yoshitomo). Shirahata means "white flag" which is symbolic of the Minamoto clan. There also used to be a statue of Yoritomo here, but it was moved to the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno.
Shirahata Shrine. Kamakura, Kanagawa.
On the grounds of the former Jibutsu-do (Hokke-do) lies the grave of one of Japan's most famous historical figures, Minamoto Yoritomo (1147-1199). Yoritomo established the first bakufu government here in Kamakura after the final defeat of the rival Taira clan in 1185. The original temple was replaced by Shirahata Shrine in the Meiji era, but the tiered grave stone dates back to 1779.
