Hiking and sightseeing from our base for the week in Staunton, Virginia.
According to Wikipedia, "The cavern system is adorned with speleothems such as columns, mud flows, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and mirrored pools. The caverns host the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithophone made from solenoid-fired strikers that tap stalactites of varied sizes to produce tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks, or bells."

This is the result of driving on Newfoundland highways in the winter when there’s a slush of mud and salt on the road and the temperature is well below freezing. The photo below shows the doors and running board of my pickup truck. No wonder vehicles don’t last long in these parts.
These icy fingers that have formed on the vehicle are about an inch long. It would be interesting to know why they form this way … rather than in just one solid sheet.
