Facts about British Railways : November 1930 : British Railways Press Bureau : London : 1930 : cover

For many of the inter-war years the Grouped railways, along with the Metropolitan Railway, issued this booklet of 'facts' about the associated railways through the British Railways Press Bureau based in Westminster, London. The 'Big Four' created by mergers in 1923, the London MIdland & Scottish, the London & North Eastern, the Great Western and the Southern Railways were amongst the country's most strategic of industries, in terms of capital, employee numbers, passenger and freight transport and the Bureau enabled them to exercise some political clout. This was particularly the case by 1930 when, for the first time in a century, their near monopoly on transport was being challenged by the growing motor vehicle lobby.

The booklet therefore gives information about capital, equipment, employment and data on passenger, freight and shipping services along with income, expenditure and costs. The striking cover is by Tom Purvis, an artist associated with the publicity work of the LNER, and the booklet has numerous vignettes that could well be 'stock illustrations". The cover also shows some lettering by the artist.

The figures quoted in the booklet cover the year 1929; not good years given the trade depression of the period and indeed, the main line railways would spend many of the coming years attempting to better deal with competition including changes to the legal framework governing the operation of railways around issues such as common carriage.

Visit of the Bundes Deutscher Gebrauchsgraphiker to London, September 1925 : in : Gebrauschgraphik Jahr. 2, Heft 2 : 1925 : Diner im Hotel Cecil : British guests

In September a party of German graphic designers and artists, members of the B.D.G. or Bundes Deutscher Gebrauchsgraphiker E.V. made a trip to London to meet with fellow professionals and to see the sights. The text tells of the journey on the White Star line "Arabic" from Hamburg, during which the group appear to have coverted the White Star Line's luggage labels, to Southampton and on to London. Over the next few days the group not only see the sights of London, for example, visiting the Empire Exhibition at Wembley and admiring Herrick's work, the group also meet a number of designers and visits shops and studios such as those of R.P. Gossop, Heal's, Crawford's advertising agency, the Carlton Studios and the V & A Museum to see the poster collections.

Even travel on the Underground, for example to Russell Square station, and where much is made of the advertising and the lifts.

The group are entertained at a dinner in the Hotel Cecil. This is organised by the Editor of the then equally new magazine "Commercial Art", Gebrauschgraphik having been founded in 1924 following on from "Das Plakat", at which numerous luminaries of the British poster and graphic design industry are present. Speeches are made and these involve various guests including the Chairman of the Leicester based handicrafts company Dryad, Mr. H H Peach, and Prof. Frenzel from Berlin.

The article includes two group photographs; one of the German party on their voyage and another of some of the dinner guests at the Hotel Cecil in London. It's great to be able to 'see' some of the names of the many artists whose work we now know. Amongst the British group are; Robert Braun, editor of Commercial Art magazine, H.H. Peach of Dryad, Josef (Joseph) Thorp, M. Gossop, Hamilton Smith of Heal's, Tom Purois (Purvis), Septimus Scott and Austin Cooper.

Shell Lubricating Oil for Modern Motors : lorry bill or poster by Tom Purvis : issued by Shell-Mex Ltd., London : 1928

One of the large range of advertising 'lorry bills' that were affixed to Shell-Mex delivery vehicles and issued by the company during the 1920s and 1930s. This, emphasising the modernity of the modern bather, is by using "modern days, modern ways" telling of Shell's advanced lubricating oil.

It is by Tom Purvis (1888 - 1959), one of the UK's then best known poster artists, who was commissioned not just by Shell but a wide range of clients including Austin Reed and the London & North Eastern Railway. This is typical of his style; bold colours and a simplicity of image.

Some L.N.E.R. posters ; illustrated catalogue : London & North Eastern Railway : nd [c.1930] Whitby, Hamburg via Grimsby and The East Coast

Many, if not all of the major railways, produced colourful and artisitic posters to 'sell' various destinations and services to the travelling public. Following the creation of the "Big Four" grouped railways in the UK in 1924 one in particular made an early and concious decision to set high standards for their advertising and publicity, including posters. To this end the London & North Eastern Railway had a 'stable' of well known poster artists that they paid an annual retainer to and, alongside this established group, they regularly commissioned other designers and artists to produce pictorial posters.

The other railways were no laggards, although the GWR was probably the most conservative as had been the LMSR in their earlier years when various worthy RA artists produced a series of posters in 'traditional' style. One thing that is interesting during the 1920s is seeing the swing towards more modern style of poster designs and artists working more in an 'abstract' style and of all transport undertakings, arguably, what was to be London Transport took the lead here. That said the LNER were increasingly happy, or more assured, to start to commission more contemporary styles as the work of Tom Purvis here shows.

This small but wonderfully illustrated catalogue is not dated but is unlikely to be later than say 1930 and it shows that the company were enthusiastically selling copies of their posters to the general public; Double Royals for 2/6d, Quad Royals of 5/- with special prices for school purposes of 1/9d and 3/- resepctively. The Underground Group (later London Transport) had a poster sales shop. They show a wonderful range of posters of destinations within the LNER operating territory and Continental destinations available by the company's steamer services from Hull and Harwich. There is even one of the cheeky Herrick posters advertising advertising space! The covers show two small cartouche of an artist at work and of a bill poster at his trade. I wonder if these don't show John Hassall's work?

Three posters here; two Double Royals and one Quad Royal. The dominant poster here is Tom Purvis's famous East Coast in his typical style and showing the more contemporary style in graphic design. The poster of Whitby Cliffs in Yorkshire by Spencer Pryseis also typical of his style. Frank Newbould shows a wonderfully Hanseatic view of the old port of Hamburg in Germany, travelling via Grimsby.
