John was killed in action on Wednesday 4th. September 1918. He is buried in Grave: IV. H. 33. at Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, Pas de Calais, France.
10437 Private Bertie Thomas Ellis, 5th. Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
Born 19th. February 1995 at Heckington, Norfolk, the son of Thomas, a labourer, and Sarah Ann Ellis of Green Road, Hempnall. Brother of Percy, below.
Originally enlists as a Territorial on 9th. April 1913 as 1880 Private, 4th. Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Released on 24th. October 1913 to enlist the same day at Saxlingham, Norfolk as regular solider 10437 Private, Coldstream Guards.
At his medical at Norwich the following day he is described as 5 ft. 9 in. tall, weighed 140 lb. with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. Distinguishing marks were a scar on the knuckle of his left index finger, and a linear scar on the back of his head. He was found fit for service in the army.
He arrived at the Caterham Depot on the 28th. October 1913 and was posted to the 2nd. Battalion. He landed in France on the 12th. August 1914.
Returning from the trenches to near Lagowede, France, he reported sick with cough and expectoration. On the 26th January 1916 he was back in the UK and transferred to the 5th. Battalion, being discharged on the 27th. March 1916 as no longer fit for service. The cause of discharge is recorded as Phthisis. The Medical Board deemed it was the result of active service, exposure and hardships. He was given Chelsea Pensioner number 66927D
Bertie died, aged 22, on Friday 25th. January 1918. His place of burial is unknown.

Born in 1898 in Broome, Norfolk, the son of Thomas, a labourer, and Sarah Ann Ellis of Green Road, Hempnall. Brother of Bertie, above.
Resident of Norwich, Norfolk.
Enlisted at Norwich on 6th. November 1916. At his medical he was recorded as 5 ft. 4.5 in. tall and weighed 105 lb.
He transferred to the 98th. Training Battalion at Aldershot on the 6th. April 1917. He was appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on the 16th. May 1917 and transferred to the 6th. Battalion, Middlesex Regiment on the 16th. October 1917. He left for Egypt on the 30th November 1917.
Percy died at sea on Sunday 30th. December 1917 when the troopship Aragon, waiting in the Alexandria Roads for permission to enter port was attacked at about 11:00 hrs by the German Type UC II submarine UC-34. About 17 to 20 minutes after being hit Aragon went down, and she suffered a second explosion as the cold seawater reached her hot boilers. Of those aboard Aragon, 610 were killed.
Percy has no known grave and is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial in eastern Alexandria, Egypt.

The son of Nairn and Mabel Annie Fraser, of Hempnall.
Jack died, aged 19, on Tuesday 11th. June 1940 when Fairey Battle Mk. I, serial number L 5200, coded QT-L failed to return from combat operations over Northern France.
The aircraft took off from Villiersfaux and was shot down in position 49°12′41″N 1°23′06″E in the commune of Bouafles, 6 km south-west of Les Andelys, south of Rouen by flak and anti aircraft artillery during a daytime attack on pontoon bridges over the River Seine at Le Manoir.
Jack and Wireless Op./Air Gunner 615842 Sgt James Henshall Ledson were killed, but Pilot P/O Basil William Peryman, bailed out but parachuted down into enemy held territory and was captured. He became a PoW, interned in PoW camps Oflag IX-A/H at Spangenberg, Germany and Stalag Luft III at Sagan, Poland as PoW No. 413.
Jack is buried with James Ledson, aged 21, in Block S, Plot 4, Row T, Joint grave 9 at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France with the personal inscription,

5778878 Private Raymond Ernest Madgett, 6th. Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment.
Born on Thursday 10th. September 1914 at Hempnall, the son of Ernest, an insurance agent working for the Prudential Insurance Company and Hetty Valsie Madgett, nee Sparkes. He had one sister Betty May, 1922 to 2010.
After leaving school Raymond became an assistant in a grocers shop.
The 1939 Register shows the family living at The Bungalow, Fritton Aria, Hempnall.
In 1940 Raymond married Joyce Helen Carey in Norwich, Norfolk. They lived at 54 Church Road, Hedenham, Norfolk and would have no children.
Joyce remarried in 1954, to Alfred Stanley Reynolds and died on 9th. April 1996 aged 82. She was buried in St. Peter's churchyard, Hedenham, Norfolk.
Enlisting, Raymond was posted to 6th. Batt, Norfolk's, assigned to coastal defence duties and training to repel a German invasion.
In October 1941 however, as part of 18th. Infantry Division, Raymond left Britain, destined to fight against the Japanese in the defence of Singapore and Malaya. When Singapore fell on 15th. February 1942 Raymond became a PoW. He shipped overland to Thailand on 20th. October 1942 and forced to work on the notorious Thailand-Burma Railway.
He succumbed to inhumane treated meted out by the Japanese and died of cholera, aged 28, on Wednesday 21st. July 1943 whilst working at Kannyu River No. 1 Camp. He was cremated and buried in Joint Grave: 76 at Lower Kannyu No. 1 Cemetery with,

On a pedestrian walk through from Rouen Road to Kings Street, memorials recovered from the old breweries thats once dominated the area and have now gone have been assembled.
The 1914-18 memorial originally came from Steward & Patteson Brewery in Barrack Street. It was on the wall just inside the main gates next to the gatekeepers office. It was moved to Rouen Road when the Barrack Street brewery closed.
