I'm fortunate to be spending time in the foothills of the Rockies near Lyons CO, while house sitting for a friend. The nearest neighbor is a half mile away, and the dominant sounds during the day are the jays fighting for a spot at the feeder. There are both Steller's and Woodhouse's scrub jays, with the former being more abundant.
Woodhouse's scrub jay was lumped with California scrub jays unitl 2016. Woodhouse's is more of a pine habitat specialist, while the California scrub jay is an oak woodland specialist. The bill of the Woodhouse's scrub jay is finer, more adept at extracting seeds from pine cones. In contrast the California scrub jay has a stouter bill more suitable for cracking open acorns.
