The Postcard
A postcard that was published by M. A. Wilkinson of 50, Sadler Street, Durham.
The card was posted in Durham using two 1d. stamps on Thursday the 3rd. September 1942. The card was sent to:
Mrs. R. G. Davis,
'Whitbourne',
226. Malvern Road,
Worcester.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"Wed. 2/9/42.
I received the shoes etc.
yesterday & the parcel
of socks and vests etc.
today.
Thanks very much.
Unfortunately, the
wrapping paper had
got wet which had
soaked through to the
pants & vest!!
Anyway, Marion says
she'll see to them and
will send them on to me
again at Manchester.
She says she is writing
to you later.
We have come here for
the afternoon & evening
and are about to have
tea.
We have had a lovely
walk along the river.

Chris and Marion."
Pitomnik Airfield
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 3rd. September 1942, German troops captured Pitomnik Airfield at Stalingrad.
The Sinking of a U-Boat
Also on that day, German submarine U-162 was depth charged and sunk northeast of Trinidad by British warships.

Also on the 3rd. September 1942, German submarine U-705 was depth charged and sunk in the Bay of Biscay by Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bombers.
Al Jardine
The day also marked the birth, in Lima, Ohio, of the guitarist, singer, and songwriter Al Jardine.
Al was a member of The Beach Boys.
John Mosher
The 3rd. September 1942 also marked the death at the young age of 50 of the American short story writer John Mosher.
John, who was film critic for The New Yorker, died of heart disease.
