The retrograde Greek inscription, made pre-firing:

This is the earliest known artist's signature from the Greek world, unfortunately for poor ...inos. The figural scene, also incomplete, may represent a sphinx

At the prow of the ship are represented a warrior and a female figure, perhaps to be interpreted as Theseus and Ariadne; behind, five oarsmen. Above, a figure milks a cow. Below, another figure pets a dog.
