Alabastro Fiorito - Ostia Antica

Revetment slab of alabastro fiorito that decorates the famous Thermopolium (Via di Diana; I,II,5) at Ostia Antica.
Quarry source is thought to be in the environs of Hierapolis (now in Turkey).
When cut perpendicular to the grain the effect is that of parallel stripes, as in this example from the Capitoline Museums.
