Megara: so-called "Tomb of Kar," 16 by diffendale

Megara: so-called "Tomb of Kar," 16

The ancient polis of Megara (see on Pleiades) is largely hidden by the modern city of the same name, on the isthmus between the Corinthia and Attica. On the shoulder of a hill overlooking the Saronic Gulf are the remains of a circular foundation in ashlar masonry, traditionally called the "Tomb of Kar," after the monument to the city's mythical founder, which Pausanias says was located along the road to Corinth. The foundations could be the remains of a watchtower or the tomb of Telephanes, a famous aulos player, or something else entirely.
