Another day touring an island surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean Sea. In fact, it's where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Christopher Columbus was the first European to visit in 1493. Saint Kitts was under British control for centuries and obtained their independence in 1983. Nevis is the large hazy island in the distance. Their economy is very dependent on tourism, which is the case with all of the West Indies islands. Combined population is ~48,000.

Just minutes away from the very “Americanised” cruise terminal and shopping complex in Basseterre, is a quite beach.
Along the beach here a number of conch shells. A great find.

In high contrast to the smart shopping mall in Basseterre, St Kitts, the less than wealthy houses one street back from the front.

I walked up the hill in Basseterre to find that the church was guarded by police. Shortly after a few American’s off two cruise ships made their way past me. “Dont go near” they said, “there is a gun man inside”. Why they here hurrying beat me. I would have thought they where immune to gunmen running amock.
Some minutes later an unmarked police SUV drove in at speed, two armed officers ran to the church. Ten minutes of nothing then another police car and two officers slowly walked to the front door. A lady officer then brings out the offender. Sensational event over.
The church is St. George's Anglican Church, was originally built in 1706. Fires, earthquakes and storms led to many rebuilds. This version was started in 1844 and completed 1869.

Basseterre is the main commercial and industrial centre of St. Kitts. It is also the country's main port of entry for both sea and air travel, as well as the road and rail transport hub. It houses the administration buildings for the federal government.
