Despite American Airlines operating the largest Airbus A320 family fleet anywhere in the world, the carrier also operates a considerably large Boeing 737 fleet with over 300 Boeing 737-800s in service with their Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet now hitting 50 examples with a further 80 on the order book.
Like Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines in the late-1990s, American Airlines was an exclusive Boeing customer and no surprise they were an early customer for the Boeing 737-800, taking delivery of their first example in 1999 with an initial batch of 78 examples ordered for delivery between 1999 to 2001. The introduction of the Boeing 737-800, the continued influx of Boeing 757-200s along with acquiring TWA's McDonnell Douglas MD-80s in 2001 allowed American Airlines to retire their last remaining Boeing 727s by 2002.
In the intervening years, American Airlines would operate one of the largest Boeing 737 fleets anywhere in the world where they are currently 4th behind Southwest Airlines, Ryanair Group and United Airlines operating larger fleets. American Airlines was one of the main airlines that enabled Boeing to design the now current-generation Boeing 737 MAX which they were a launch customer.
American Airlines utilise their Boeing 737s across all of their major hubs, and were amongst the earliest type to have been inaugurated into post-merger US Airways hubs.
Currently, American Airlines operates 353 Boeing 737s, which includes 303 Boeing 737-800s and 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s. American Airlines have 80 Boeing 737 MAX 8s on-order.
November Eight Eight Zero November November is one of 303 Boeing 737-800s operated by American Airlines, delivered new to the carrier on lease from GECAS on 7th December 2011, later leased from Jackson Square Aviation in June 2016 and she is powered by 2 CFM International CFM56-7B24E engines.
