Brown algae, Chance Harbour

Legacy digital photo, location Chance Harbour, New Brunswick.

Maybe kelp or rockweed, but I'm unable to distinguish them from the larger group called brown algae. Despite relying on photosynthesis, brown algae are not closely related to plants. All their close relatives are single-celled organisms that acquired photosynthesis separately through symbiosis with other algae. Brown algae alone evolved larger multicellular bodies resembling plants, exemplifiying convergent evolution.

Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.

It is a Brown Algae that grows on rocks and shells. Its bubble like floats are buoyant and this species thrives in the quietest parts of the bay. It is used by small herbivorous gastropods that shelter amongst the branches.

Hooded crow in water

Hooded crow is paddling in shallow water and seems not to care of the waves reaching the shore. Note the big amount of brown algae, which previous day storm had pushed to the beach.
