Cactus Trails to the Santa Rosa Peaks by FotoGrazio

Cactus Trails to the Santa Rosa Peaks

This stunning view captures the arid beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert, framed by the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains. These mountains, part of the Peninsular Ranges, rise dramatically from the desert floor, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding terrain. Known for their geological diversity and ancient history, the Santa Rosa Mountains were once home to the Cahuilla people, who thrived in this challenging landscape. The foreground is dotted with cholla cacti and desert shrubs, showcasing the hardy vegetation adapted to this harsh yet enchanting desert environment.

A spread of prickly pear, very pleasing, among sagebrush and green ephedra, late Triassic mudstone, and early Jurassic sandstone. by Tim Kiser

A spread of prickly pear, very pleasing, among sagebrush and green ephedra, late Triassic mudstone, and early Jurassic sandstone.

Yes prickly pear (Opuntia sp.), sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), and green ephedra (Ephedra viridis).

At the left is an exposure of the Chinle Formation, mostly mudstone, formed in a tropical environment from deposits in densely vegetated floodplains or mudflats containing shallow ponds and small shallow streams, ~232 to ~206.7 million years ago, during the Carnian, Norian, and Rhaetian ages of the Late Triassic epoch in the Mesozoic era.

In the distance at the right is Wingate Sandstone of the Glen Canyon Group, formed from Sahara-like dune deposits, ~206.7 to ~199.8 million years ago, also in the Mesozoic era, during the Rhaetian age of the Late Triassic epoch and the Hettangian age of the Early Jurassic epoch.

You ought to be ecstatic at this.

Cigar-shaped young saguaro in the middle of a footpath.

The surrounding scenery had been made strange by the freakishness of the towering V-shaped ruins of a dead saguaro.
