Not the common bird on the park! this tanager has a limited distribution in Ecuador and Colombia and it proved to be very shy despite the larger size. With a bit of luck and patience I came away with a few keepers, not 100% happy but eager to go back and try my luck with this stunning species again!

This mountain tanager was found at the Yanacocha Reserve, Quito, Ecuador.
Black-chested Mountain-Tanager (Cnemathraupis eximia) is rather uncommon and local, and one of two members of the genus Cnemathraupis, the other being Golden-backed Mountain Tanager (Cnemathraupis aureodorsalis). Molecular phylogenetic analyses rejected a monophyletic Buthraupis, to which both of these species belonged, and Cnemathraupis was erected for these two species. Black-chested Mountain-Tanager ranges in the Andes from Southern Colombia through Ecuador. It inhabits high elevation treeline cloud forest, mostly on the eastern slope of the Andes although this guy was found on the Western side.
