A friend I bird with a lot also likes snakes, and spotted this very large gopher snake just after we saw the poorwill. It's one of, if not the largest, gopher snakes I've ever seen, it looked to be just shy of six feet long.

I did not expect to see a poorwill down on the valley floor in the middle of the day, a friend I bird with a lot said he accidentally flushed one yesterday, we went to the wood pile where he saw it yesterday and it flushed again. It eventually flew back to the woodpile and I got a not so great photo looking through some twigs and branches. They do have some excellent camouflage.

There were four barn owls that I accidentally flushed at different parts of Grasslands regional park, I assume it's two parents and two relatively large adolescents. They flew around and three of the four were roosting in an evergreen tree when I walked by again later.
At the Yolo Bypass, the plovers have been here all winter, but a handful of whimbrel are migrating through and will only be here for a short time, particularly given how quickly the bypass is drying up.
