3DA6 Korunye 06/02/2025

Running an hour late due to multiple CTC failures in the Crystal Brook area is Aurizon Intermodal service 3DA6 from Berrimah to Islington as ALF24/FQ04 work through Korunye on Thursday the 6th of February 2025, the FQ originally lead this train out of Darwin however the locomotives were spun on the triangle at Muckaty due to an Air Conditioning failure, with the ALF leading the remainder of the journey to Adelaide.

ALF24 joins classmates ALF22 & ALF23 in wearing the Aurizon livery, standing out amongst the other inherited locomotives ex One Rail Australia in the Aurizon Bulk Central fleet. The CLF/CLP class locomotives are due to receive the yellow treatment in the coming months as overhaul programs commence at the Motive Power Centre in Dry Creek, with repainting to be completed at Islington Workshops by Railfirst Asset Management.

After some earlier ground relay issues from FQ04 at Petwood, loaded Aurizon grain service 2182S from Tailem Bend to Pelican Point works out of the Belair National Park behind the combination of GWA001/CLP8/CLP16/CLP17/FQ04 on Saturday the 24th of February 2024.

Aurizon's South line grain combos have been rather good lately, with plenty of variety in the locomotive power to compliment ideal train pathing often presented around this time of year. It's quite uncommon to see 3 CLF/CLP class locomotives together on the South line.

Aurizon's FQ04, CLF6, V544 & FQ02 at the head of an empty (Standard Gauge) grain train, power uphill through Torrens Park, South Australia. Unfortunately for me, the Adelaide Metro suburban (Broad Gauge) railcars heading to Belair, were powering uphill faster, and thus performed a great photo blocking manouvre...

Another one bites the dust

Iron ore traffic to the Cairn Hill mine in far north South Australia has always been a bit hit and miss with fluctuating ore prices, weather impacts, changes of load point etc.

The ore is trucked to Rankin Dam siding, which is nominally served by three return containerised trains a week to/from Outer Harbour (Port Adelaide).

CU-River Mining has recently announced that the Cairn Hill mine will be placed into care and maintenance upon completion of their next vessel in Port Adelaide, with the final (empty) Cairn Hill service planned to depart Dry Creek on Thursday 2nd February. The decision to place the mine into care and maintenance was made due to a quicker than planned exhaustion of the useable DSO ore body resulting in the remaining ore becoming unmarketable.

In happier times, One Rail Australia locomotives FQ04 (EMD) and GW003 (GE) are seen at Wirrappa with loaded train #9102 on Monday 4 October 2021.
