Amtrak's westbound Borealis is right on time, as they cross South Church street in Watertown on this beautiful spring afternoon, while sprinting for the Twin Cities.

A southbound Amtrak Hiawatha cruises through the Edgebrook area of Chicago. Amtrak P42DC #71 leads the train. Later that afternoon, it would be on the rear of a northbound train.

One of the most successful trains ever in Amtrak history, the northbound Borealis hurries thru the Edgebrook Metra Station. P32-8BWH #518 is in the lead. These older GE locomotives are operating on this route somewhat frequently.
In a few days hence, the Horizon Fleet cars seen in this train would be withdrawn from service because of corrosion.
..Stick around for 5 minutes, it'll change. Amtrak P32-8BWH is seen switching some Siemens Venture cars in the Chicago Passenger Yard on a snowy March morning.
The week of March 16-March 23, 2025 ran the full gamut of 70-degrees Fahrenheit to this snowy morning. The afternoon if March 21, 2023 would become, sunny, in the 50s Fahrenheit, and a relatively nice day. The snow would be gone.
Norfolk Southern AC44C6M #4193 leads a westbound intermodal trail at Burns Harbor. This locomotive was rebuilt by Wabtec/GE/Erie from NS C40-9W #8994.
This train was heading west as I was pulling into the South Shore Line parking lot for the adjacent Ogden Dunes Station. normally park where the vehicle in the distance is.
Amtrak P42DC # 201 is seen at the Chicago Locomotive Facility. It was built by GE in 2001. ]
The GE P40DCs and P42DCs replaced the F40PHs and in turn are ostensibly being replaced by new Siemens ALC-42s.
Don't count the GEs out yet. Amtrak has had troubles with the new Siemens units and still has to rely on the older locomotives.
Notice the diesel fuel storage tank and the 18th Street Bridge Tower.
Amtrak ALC-42 #327 and P42DC #154 (in a tribute to the 'Phase IV' scheme) are seen at the Chicago Passenger Yard. They will later lead the Seattle/Portland-bound Empire Builder.
In the background is the now-shuttered ICON theater. It closed in 2024 after only twenty years or so when the theater chain, Keresotas, abruptly shut down. Reportedly, AMC will take over the cinema.
