A Great Spider of Australia

No one knows for sure where the Great Spiders came from. Some believe they evolved from the common spider through intentional or accidental genetic engineering, Cosmic radiation or a drastic increase in protein availability. Some even claim they were sent by the Gods to punish the Mythic age races for their impiety and demon worship.

I wanted to get a clean stack all I needed is for her to sit still for long enough. I am grateful that she did. I am well pleased with this image of her

The lens was set to the 2:1 setting which means this is a 4:1 with a 2x crop factor applied makes it pretty much an 8x greater than life size.

I always apply a 5:4 ratio crop in post and start that in Helicon.

I am currently printing on my 3d printer an adapter I for the Olympus MCON-P02 Macro converter that has a little hood on it. I am looking forward to seeing how that goes once I have all of the bits printed. Designing is much fun and fixing 3d printers I think sometimes can be a good test for ones patience.

I picked up a new addition to my slow growing macro kit this week.

A 2x tele converter. I was using tele converters a long time ago for automated focus stacking and had watched things like the 90mm OM systems lens be launched and the fact it worked with a tele converter was exciting for me and many others.

I took a long time to catch the bus but better late than never.

I am quite impressed with sharpness using the MC-20 with the 90mm and what is achievable hand held blows me away.

I look forward to getting more practice in using this kit.

Social Huntsman Spiders or delena cancerides

As far as spiders go this species from the Huntsman Spider family of Spiders are very interesting to me. This one being an adult male has left the colony he was raised in and started a life on his own searching for a female to start his own colony with.

As I have mentioned in a previous post about these they live together and share food with one another. There is a breeding female that can end up getting quite large.

I find the stigma surrounding spiders to be unfortunate. If treated with respect they do not want to bite you.

I enjoy making art with them to show the amazing bits we do not see and hope to bring about positive education by my involvement and interactions with them.

These 2 images of this adult male where made while it was standing on a piece of picture frame glass.

He did not move. I moved my background from one side to the other and he was not fussed about any of that. He would not accept my food offering in the form of a cricket.

Most male spiders once an adult loose interest in food and have reproduction on the mind.

This truly is a face a mother could love.

No really there is a face here.

This series is getting addicting. Revealing to myself and the world the not often seen

The underworld of the tiny world at our feet or the flip-side of it.

Live Spider - No Harm done. I photograph them through glass.

Can you see the face here? It brightened up my day a lot.
I have been chuckling away about it whilst editing and was itching to get it out to hopefully brighten up the days of others also.

Its Upside down Miss Jane

Lots to look at in this ventral image such as

He is not yet mature as can be seen by taking a look at his palps.
He has a regrown leg
He has a parasite
We can see on the side of his sternum where the legs come out there is visibly less hair where I suspect energy was put into regeneration.

If you wonder about this ones size. He is not tiny. from the end of his abdomen to the red area where his fangs are he measures 15mm

He was such a good boy I will feed him before letting him go on his way.

This gal needs no introduction for many of us Aussies and most often when we talk about the outback dunny these are not far from our thoughts.

The Redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) belong to the Family Theridiidae

Did you know?
A female Red-Back Spider can store sperm (from multiple mates) from matings for up to 2 years and still lay eggs. They have also been recorded going over 360 days with no food and surviving!

Complete with droplets but if you look closer there is also many spring tails surrounding her. There is even one on top of the water drop that is on the back of her abdomen...

I bet with a guardian like that none are afraid of the ugly photographer making their picture.

It always amazes me that no matter how many times you go to a location you can always manage to find something new.

This evening I went out searching with a new friend and it did not take long for us to find a crazy Beetle I have never seen before or heard of. Bombardier Beetle!!

Not long after around the other side of the tree to be exact was this Huntsman female. If you are scratching your head trying to work out if Helicon did a terrible job or not that would be understandable.

She is in fact missing 2 eyes!! It is no stacking error. It is the craziest thing I have ever seen!!

I only knew what this one was as I made images of a very tiny one in June 2019

Looking back it is amazing to come to realize how much I have improved. The last couple of years especially I have spent a great deal of my time walking urban park lands in my hometown searching for anything to be a hero for me in a macro scene.

I found this one with a friend of mine that loves getting out and finding different spiders and insect life. He seen her this evening but I told him she would be there as I spotted her a few evenings ago.

Here she is looking all defensive and stuff. I didnt wanna cramp her style by moving the things stopping me getting those front legs in focus. I think this turned out amazing anyway.

For a dorsal view of her follow this link www.flickr.com/photos/197602498@N04/53764295985/in/datepo...

I came across this one last night and I was not in a good mood. Trying to line up a pleasing composition it decided to drop out of the tree and take things to the ground. It was hanging from silk when I discovered it. I felt bad but I know these are pretty resilient and would be back up there in no time. So here it is in its "environment" so to speak.. Oh and its a focus stack!

Funny about that. Some people rather than admit they cant focus stack they will say I show my subjects in the whole environment.... Pretty similar to blaming your setup because you cant get the shots you want because you are yet to learn how to. Imagine blaming your broom when you didnt sweep the doorstep right?

Quite a small one I found yesterday. I only found it due to taking a closer look after seeing its silk all over a nearby grass seed head. It was very well hidden and was picked up after I blew in the area and it moved.

In America they have a Harvestmen they call a Daddy Long Legs that is not even a true spider. This is a true spider... TRUE..

I have always wanted to capture an image like this one
.
I was getting some stuff out of my shed and she was on something.

Here she is on my front lawn...
A few of facts about these.

They can bite you.

The rumor about their fangs not being long enough is not true.

The venom they poses is only toxic enough to take down what they feed on and is not one of the most deadly in the world

They are not native to Australia.

They where accidentally introduced from Europe
