The very special Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge is located in northern Ecuador about a one hour drive south of Quito near the small town of Tambillo. After turning to the east at Tambillo, one drives about 10 minutes to Amaguaña where a right turn puts you on the road to San Pedro de Pilopata from which one continues uphill to the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is situated in the semicircular collapsed Pasochoa Volcano. Around 100,000 years ago, the volcano exploded and blew off the western half of the preexisting volcanic cone. The refuge is known for its well preserved native vegetation and is situated above a swath of beautiful pastureland facing the interandean valley to the west.
