Ίων Δραγούμης [1878-1920]

Writer, philosopher and diplomat & a leading figure of the Macedonian Struggle and an ardent support of the Demotic Greek language, Ion (Ioannis) Dragoumis was murdered in Athens (opposite the today Hilton Hotel) hours after the assassination attempt on his political opponent E. Venizelos in Paris.

Instigator of his murder is considered to be Emmanouil Benakis, former minister of Venizelos and later to be declared 'national benefactor'. (Benakis was the father of the author Penelope Delta, with who Dragoumis has a passionate affair for several years, until he met the actress Marika Kotopouli with whom he remained until his death. )

At the point of his assassination there is today a white column standing with the verses of Kostis Palamas, the celebrated Greek poet:

«Λευκή, ας βαλθή όπου έπεσες, κολώνα,
(Πώς έπεσες, γραφή να μην το λέει)
λευκή, με της Πατρίδας την εικόνα.
Μόνο εκείνη ταιριάζει να σε κλαίει,
βουβή, μαρμαρωμένη να σε κλαίει.»

The statue of poet Kostis Palamas

Άγαλμα του Κωστή Παλαμά έξω από το Δημοτικόν Πνευματικόν Κέντρον Αθηνών.
Ο Κωστής Παλαμάς (1859 - 1943) θεωρείται ένας από τους σημαντικότερους Έλληνες ποιητές.
Ήταν ποιητής, πεζογράφος, θεατρικός συγγραφέας, ιστορικός και κριτικός της λογοτεχνίας.

Kostis Palamas (1859 - 1943) is considered one of the most important Greek poets.
He was a poet, novelist, playwright, historian and literary critic.

Kostis Palamas (13 January 1859 - 27 February 1943) was a Greek poet who wrote the words to the Olympic Hymn. He was a central figure of the Greek literary generation of the 1880s and one of the cofounders of the so-called New Athenian School (or Palamian School) along with Georgios Drosinis and Nikos Kampas.

Kostis Palamas is a well known Greek poet and author, lived from 1859 - 1943, a symbol of Greek patriotism.
On the tomb is wriiten a verse of the poet: "ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΑΚΕΡΗΟΣ Ο ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΔΙΚΗ ΣΟΥ ΓΕΝΝΑ", which in free translation means " Greece, the whole of man is your own spawn".
