Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC) train Z550 with both the road's Veterans Units works West Rock at dusk in my hometown of Columbus, Indiana off LIRC's branch in town. The branch is a remnant of the old Madison Railroad, which was the first railroad built in Indiana, and built up to Columbus from its namesake town before merging with the Jeffersonville & Indianapolis becoming the Jeffersonville, Madison, & Indianapolis Railroad (JM&I). JM&I was later purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). Several years into the Conrail era Big Blue finally leased the entire Louisville Secondary as it was then known, and associated connecting branch lines to the newly formed Louisville & Indiana Railroad (LIRC) who pays homage to its PRR roots with their attractive paint scheme.
LIRC 3002 was born as SP SD45 8855, and was built by EMD for Southern Pacific in February of 1967. It's now an SD40M-2 after spending some time as a CEFX leaser. 3002 is one of two of LIRC's Veterans units, the other being the 3001 which trails.
With my coffee getting cold, Louisville & Indiana Railroad train Z550 hammers the diamond at CP-Dale on the south side of Indianapolis, Indiana, on CSX's former JM&I/PRR/PC/CR Louisville Secondary. CSX still owns and operates the northern four miles or so of the Louisville route with the remainder being the Louisville & Indiana (LIRC). Z550 was headed to Indiana Railroad's Senate Avenue Yard for interchange from their home terminal of Columbus, Indiana.
CP-Dale is the location of the former Dale Block Station which controlled the diamond with the old Indianapolis Union Rwy. here, and in its later life, it verbally controlled the northerly two Block Limit Stations (BLS's) of Elvin and White on the Louisville Secondary.
This is the third out of four possible angles I've shot and posted for these side diamond shots here at Dale. Feel free to peruse the Louisville & Indiana album to see the other two. If you look just a few feet in front of the lead engine you may spot the foundation from Dale Block Station which still exists.
LIRC GP39-2 2304 started out life as MKT 379, and was built by EMD for Katy in June of 1984.
