It had been quite a while since I had been able to spend a full day shooting trains across the area, but I finally got a full day off to do so, and I took full advantage across not only Illinois, Indiana, but also for the first time in my life, Michigan!
Our fifth and rather quick stop was to Ogden Dunes for what we THOUGHT was a westbound CSS freight, but turned out to be CSS passenger 509 en route to South Bend, IN. We did not have much time as we needed to book it east for our final stop of the night!
After roaming around Burnham, I noticed a pair of CSS GP38-2s with a crew aboard and a train ready in the yard. South Shore typically does not run many trains on Sundays, but there was an extra running. I made my way to Hammond, and not even 10 minutes later I hear the sound of 2001's RS3L blowing for the crossings near the NITCD station. About a minute later they rounded the curve with a hefty 50+ car long train. These two geeps were evidently struggling while ascending the grade to cross over the CSX Barr subdivision. Always a treat to capture one of these.
