The yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata), sometimes referred to as the red meerkat, averages about 0.45 kg in weight and about 510 mm in length.
It lives in open country, semi-desert scrubland and grasslands in Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
De vosmangoest of rode meerkat (Cynictis penicillata) is ondanks zijn gelijkenis daarmee geen vos, maar een mangoest.
De pelskleur verschilt per verspreidingsgebied. Zuidelijke soorten hebben een geelkleurige vacht terwijl noordelijke soorten een grijskleurige vacht hebben. De korte ronde oren en de dikke staart versterken de gelijkenis met de vos.
De lichaamslengte bedraagt 40 cm. De staartlengte is 30 cm.
De vosmangoest leeft in zuidelijk Afrika in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibië, Zuid-Afrika, Swaziland en Zimbabwe en wordt vaak vergezeld door stokstaartjes.

Endémique d'Afrique australe, la mangouste jaune, ou mangouste fauve est un herpestidé, au même titre que le suricate. Principalement nocturne, mais pouvant également sortir en journée, la mangouste jaune, plutôt solitaire, lors de ses chasses, est un animal grégaire, qui forme de petits groupes de 5 à 10 individus. S'abritant à l'intérieur de terriers qu'elle confectionne elle même, ou qu'elle partage avec d'autres espèces, comme le lièvre sauteur ou le spermophile, la mangouste jaune, dont les prédateurs sont multiples, émet de petits grognements, accompagnés de sécrétions anales, à l'approche du danger. Carnivore et se nourrissant tout aussi bien de petits rongeurs, d'oiseaux, d'arachnidés ou de reptiles, la mangouste jaune, est l'une des plus petites de son espèce.

Die Fuchsmanguste (Cynictis penicillata) ist eine Säugetierart aus der Familie der Mangusten (Herpestidae) und ist nach ihrem fuchsähnlichen Äußeren benannt. Sie gehört zu den häufigeren Säugetieren Afrikas und lebt oft vergesellschaftet mit Erdmännchen.
