On the head of the household!

Baby gators have it pretty tough. They are prey for just about any predator including other gators. But when it comes to protecting her young, momma gator is at the top of the food chain. The safest place for baby to be is right there on the head of the household! On a separate note, congratulations to those football Gator's for their first SEC win. And a special thank you to the University of Tennessee for Voluntarily losing that game! (Sorry Vol's fans, but it's true;)

The guardian

Was she close...you bet...but not in an aggressive manner!! This is a shot of the young lady that guards the clutch of little lizards in alligator alley that I posted earlier!! She just happened to pop up next to the canoe while I was photographing one of my little green friend! You can see that the details on her head are obscured by the water draining away but what I like about the shot is the eye!!

No need to fear because there was no threatening posture from her and she quickly slid back under the water when she realized that she was that close to the canoe!! Captured on a very gray morning in alligator alley on Horsepen Bayou!

Dolly's menacing approach....

Okay!!! So Dolly wasn't menacing and truth be told I could have paddled right up to the pod and had a closer look as she didn't seem to care at all!!!

Going to check

I am now 100% certain that this is momma gator crawling out of the water to go check on the nest! She has become VERY insistent about people approaching the area and once again came toward the canoe this past Wednesday to back me off from the area! I like the paint and woodwork on my canoe JUST the way it is and will not press the issue! Taken one Horsepen Bayou in alligator alley or gator gauntlet!

Let me just add that this is a rather small female in the neighborhood of seven feet! She is not moving aggressively toward the canoe but shows none of the natural fear that alligators usually possess when you approach in a canoe! She is merely trying to back me away from the nesting area!
