TORRENT TYRANNULET Serpophaga cinerea. An adult Torrent Tyrannulet is feeding an insect to a fledgling on a boulder in the Río Mindo near Mindo in northwestern Ecuador on May 10, 2013. On this morning we discovered two fledgling Torrent Tyrannulets being fed by two adults. We watched them for about 40 minutes as the adults would fly off over the water in search of insect food and the young would wait to beg when an adult would fly in. The fledglings were fully capable of flight and were sometimes together and sometimes in different locations. The Torrent Tyrannulet is a neotropical flycatcher belonging to the avian family Tyrannidae.

TROPICAL KINGBIRD Tyrannus melancholicus Eating a Strangler Fig Fruit in Mindo in Northwestern ECUADOR. Photo by Peter Wendelken.

TROPICAL KINGBIRD Tyrannus melancholicus. This Tropical Kingbird is eating a Strangler Fig Fruit which it plucked from the top of an adjacent tree along the Vía Cunuco, about one mile north of Mindo, in northwestern Ecuador at 8:45 AM on October 11, 2016. This kingbird plucked the fruit from the crown of a tree of medium height which bore hundreds of reddish-purple fruits that were being consumed not only by Tropical Kingbirds but also by various species of tanagers and other birds over a period of several weeks.

This is a good example of fruit consumption by flycatchers. The Tropical Kingbird usually secures its food by making long sallying flights to capture insects and then returning to a perch to eat them.

To see a photo of a Tropical Kingbird eating a different kind of wild fruit, also in Mindo, go to this link: www.flickr.com/photos/neotropical_birds_mayan_ruins/21000...

The Tropical Kingbird is a neotropical flycatcher belonging to the family Tyrannidae. It is found from southern Arizona to Argentina and Brazil and is also found in Trinidad and Tobago. I have seen it one time in the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California.

In Brazil, Tyrannus melancholicus is known by the common name Suiriri.
