Rosse fluiteend, Birds of Eeden
Als we vanochtend vertrekken informeert de eigenaresse van de B&B waar we naar toe gaan en..... welke route we nemen. Ze kijkt wat bedenkelijk en belt de lodge in Addo en vraagt wat de beste manier is om hen te bereiken. Ook zij raden aan om niet de kortste route over de R335 te nemen. Deze weg gaat dwars door townships waar toeristen, op weg naar de wildparken, regelmatig lastig gevallen worden. Vorig jaar zijn er twee Duitse toeristen vermoord. Het wordt een flink stuk omrijden.

We besluiten alleen naar de Birds of Eden te gaan. De grootste volière ter wereld waar je door een tropisch regenwoud loopt. Het is prachtig en Kees haalt zo weer zijn gemiddelde van foto's per dag om hoog.

The Fulvous Whistling Duck, too Fulvous Tree Duck, (Dendrocygna bicolor) is a whistling duck which breeds across the world's tropical regions in much of Central and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent to Burma, Hawaii and the Gulf Coast of the United States. The Fulvous Whistling Duck lives in marshlands, wet meadows, rice fields, flooded agricultural areas and lagoons with plentiful vegetation, where this duck feeds mainly at night on seeds and other parts of plants. It nests on a stick platform in reeds, laying 8–12 eggs, but hollow trees or old bird nests are occasionally used for nesting.
As the name “Whistling Duck” implies, these are noisy birds with a clear whistling kee-wee-ooo call. “Fulvous” means tawny.
The adults reach a length from 48 to 53 cm and a weight between 600 and 800 grams. The wing span is from 85 to 93 cm). It has a long grey bill, long head and longish legs, buff head and underparts, the latter reddish-tinged on the flanks, a dark crown, and dark grey back and wings. The tail and wing patches are chestnut, and there is a white crescent on the upper tail which is visible in flight. Males and females have similar plumage, although the males are a little larger. Juveniles have less contrasted flank and tail colouration.

De wijdverspreide rosse fluiteend of gele boomeend (Dendrocygna bicolor) dankt zijn naam “fluiteend” aan zijn luidruchtige fluitende roep. De soort leeft in tropische en sub-tropische gebieden in Zuid- en Midden Amerika, in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten, in Afrika onder de Sahara en in zuid Azie. Ze leven er op ondiepe meren en poelen, en in moerassen en rijstvelden. De rosse fluiteend zoekt bijna alleen 's nachts naar voedsel dat bestaat uit zaden, granen, rijst en insecten en andere kleine (water)diertjes.
De rosse fluiteend is te herkennen aan de lange nek, grijze poten en snavel en aan de gele/bruine schutkleur. Volwassen zijn ze 48 tot 53 cm lang en wegen ze tussen 600 en 800 gram. De vleugelspanwijdte is 85 à 93 cm. Er zijn geen uiterlijke verschillen tussen mannetjes en vrouwtjes; de mannetjes zijn wel iets groter.

A stray exotic tropical Fulvous whistling duck, found near Leekstermeer area.

How this exotic Southern hemisphere Fulvous whistling duck ended up in the Northern Netherlands is anyone's guess (-;

Zoals hun naam het zegt, zijn het echt fluiteenden en kunnen ze heel lawaaierig zijn.
Het zijn schelle fluitgeluiden, de toon van het vrouwtje
is hoger dan die van het mannetje.

Gele fluiteenden hebben in verhouding tot andere watervogels tamelijk grote vleugels.

Omdat deze fluiteenden in bomen slapen, worden ze ook wel gele boomeend genoemd.

's Nachts gaan gele fluiteenden op zoek naar zaden en planten om te eten, in het waterrijke gebied waar ze leven.
