British Railways had a network of named trains for many years, usually main line 'expresses', and these services often had extensive catering, buffet and restaurant services. This is the tariff and wine list cover for "The Mancunian".
This service between Manchester London Road (prior to its renaming as Manchester Piccadilly) and London Euston originated in 1927, the days of the London Midland & Scottish Railway prior to nationalisation in post-war years, and as the text explains the title was by this time conferred upon the 9.45am departure and 6.0pm return, the latter time having previously been 4.10pm but now using the timings of the pre-war Lancastrian.
This cover is of the relatively plain design, the ship referring to the impact of the Manchester Ship Canal and Docks on the city, and in later years BTC would become far more adventurous in terms of graphic design and typography. These inner pages have a pocket on the left side for the menu du jour to be slipped in.
