After turning to the east at Tambillo, one drives about 10 minutes to Amaguaña where a right turn puts you on the cobbled road to San Pedro de Pilopata from which you continue uphill to the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is situated in the semicircular collapsed Pasochoa Volcano. Around 100,000 years ago, the volcano exploded and blew off the western half of the preexisting volcanic cone. The refuge is remarkable for its well preserved native vegetation and is located above a stretch of beautiful pastureland facing the interandean valley to the west.
