The Postcard
A Shenley Real Photo postcard that was posted in South Norwood using a ½d. stamp on Friday the 30th. August 1912. The card was sent to:
Mr. Clifford,
c/o Mrs. Doughty,
'Sunnyside',
Upper Grove,
Margate.
The pencilled message on the back of the card was as follows:
"Dear Grandpa,
I hope you are enjoying
yourself at Margate.
Please give my love to
old Punch and Judy.
I have written this all
myself.
Much love and Kisses
from Kathleen xxx"
Kathleen was referring to the Punch and Judy show operated on Margate beach for 50 years by Charlie Smith from the late 1880's until the start of WWII.
Hermann Schwarz
So what else happened on the day that Kathleen posted the card?
Well, on the 30th. August 1912, Hermann Schwarz shot and killed seven men and wounded another six before he was captured in Romanshorn, Switzerland.
Schwarz, a 25-year-old local Romanshorn resident who was recently discharged from the Swiss Army, opened fire at people in the street from the second-story window of his apartment.
In the initial shooting and the following siege Schwarz shot a total of twelve men, six of them fatally, before managing to escape into a nearby forest.
While police and townsmen engaged in an extensive search operation, the gunman killed another person and evaded capture until the next day, when he was shot and wounded and subsequently taken into custody. A crowd of 1000 people escorted him to the police building in Romanshorn and threatened to lynch him
When Schwarz was arrested, he still had 100 rounds of ammunition for his rifle and 150 rounds for his revolver.
Schwarz was later diagnosed with mental illness and institutionized for the remainder of his life. Schwarz was found to have auditory hallucinations and paranoia, and was diagnosed with prodromal schizophrenia.
José Inés Salazar
Also on that day, rebel Mexican General José Inés Salazar began a campaign of forcing American residents to leave Mexico.
He ordered the residents of the American Mormon settlement in Colonia Morelos, in the State of Sonora, to leave the country within two weeks.
Mexican forces destroyed the American settlements on the 12th. September 1912.
Howard Wilson Emmons
The 30th. August 1912 also marked the birth, in Morristown, New Jersey, of the American engineer Howard Wilson Emmons.
Howard, who was the developer of fire protection engineering, died in 1998.
Edward Mills Purcell
Also born on that day, in Taylorville, Illinois, was the American physicist Edward Mills Purcell.
Edward was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics for using nuclear magnetic resonance for research into molecules. He died in 1997.

Mount Wilson photographed from the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Clark County located in the City of Las Vegas Nevada U.S.A.
While not technically located within the conservation area, Mount Wilson is the highest peak among the Spring Mountains situated along Red Rock Canyon, reaching over 7,000 feet high. It is certainly a daunting and challenging climb to reach the summit, but Mount Wilson has a variety of different trails and trail difficulties for hikers from novice to expert to try. If that’s not your thing, it’s also very impressive to see from the ground or the trail of an easier hike.
Mount Wilson is a mountain located in the Spring Mountain range of southern Nevada. It is located on land managed by the United States Bureau of Land Management as the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, part of the Rainbow Mountain Wilderness Area. It is the highest peak in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Main entrance to The Council House, Earl Street, Coventry, England. The Council House is a Tudor Revival-style city hall building which is the home of Coventry City Council and the seat of local government. The building was designed by architects Edward Garrett and Henry Walter Simister of Birmingham. The foundation stone was laid on June12, 1913 and the building was completed in 1917, although, because of the First World War, the official opening by the Duke of York only took place on June 11, 1920. During the Second World War, the bombings on the night of November 14, 1940, known as the Coventry Blitz, caused some damage to the building including the destruction of the stained glass windows.
The statues above the entrance were installed in 1924. They were designed by Henry Wilson, and depict Leofric (who founded monasteries in Coventry), Godiva (who was patron of the local monasteries), and Justice.
