I captured this image at the Lower River Platform with a view looking to the northeast across the Brooks River while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. This image is of two male brown bear play flighting or wrestling in the river.

A forested setting that I came across walking back from a hike up the side of Dumpling Mountain. This happened to have a number of trees starting to show those signs of autumn with yellow leaves. Given the mostly cloudy and overcast skies, this gave me a chance to bring the focus down to the trees and minimize the skies above. I could then better meter the image to capture the colors present and not worry about blowing any highlights in the clouds. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 3.
This was a view looking generally to the south while walking along the shoreline of Naknek Lake after finishing a hike to Dumpling Mountain. While I remembered this setting with the dried out trees and limbs along the shoreline, it wasn't until I started walking that afternoon where I decided to get down low and capture a sweeping view across. I felt by getting down low, I could capture a sense of letting this stretch out to a far off distance. Nearby things would be in focus and then slowly fade out.
I captured this image at the Falls Platform with a view looking to the northeast at Brooks Falls while observing a brown bear in Katmai National Park. The image is of a male brown bear on top of the Falls waiting for salmon to make the jump and attempt to catch it to eat. I pulled back on the focal length to capture more of the surrounding waterfall.
I captured this image at the Rifles Platform with a view looking to the north at Brooks Falls while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. I pulled back a lot on the focal length to capture much more of the falls and surrounding area with the mountainside and hills. My thinking was to capture the feeling of this wildlife and national park setting.
I captured this with my Nikon D800E SLR camera using a Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 lens. I was at the Falls Platform with a view looking to the northeast at the Brooks Falls while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. This one brown bear was eating a salmon it had recently caught in the Brooks River.
I captured this image at the Falls Platform with a view looking to the northeast at Brooks Falls while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. The image is of several male brown bears in the river and falls area attempting to catch salmon to eat. I pulled back a lot on the focal length to capture much more of the falls and surrounding area. My thinking was to include all the bears present and capture the feeling of this wildlife and national park setting.

A view looking to the northeast on a rise while hiking up the side of Dumpling Mountain one early afternoon in Katmai National Park. Off in the distance is Naknek Lake and peaks of Mount La Gorce and Mount Katolinat. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 3. I then exported a TIFF image to Silver Efex Pro 2 and performed a conversion to black & white, where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.
I captured this image while at the Lower River Platform with a view looking to the northeast and taking in a setting with the Brooks River, the nearby grassy meadows and trees. My thinking was to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and capture a more sweeping view across this landscape in Katmai National Park. That would then bring the more distant hillsides and ridgelines higher up into the image and help bring out a sense of scale and grandeur for this setting. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 3.
Zooming in definitely brings out a view with this one brown bear and its head and torso as it stands on Brooks Falls in a search for salmon. What I liked about this image was how the bear was either scratching himself or getting tired of the flies around as he stood on the waterfall edge.
