The Wide Open World of Nature Awaits (Katmai National Park & Preserve)

I captured this image at the Rifles Platform with a view looking to the north at Brooks Falls while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. I pulled back a lot on the focal length to capture much more of the falls and surrounding area with the mountainside and hills. My thinking was to capture the feeling of this wildlife and national park setting.

Trees Coming Together Like Spokes on a Wheel in the Sky (Shenandoah National Park)

A setting looking to the north and above while taking in views at a roadside pullout around the Low Gap area in Shenandoah National Park. The view is just off the park’s Skyline Drive. With this image, I walked around until I could find an angle where the trees seemingly came together as if spokes on a wheel. I wanted that look with the trees. The other thing I did was close down on the aperture so that I could create more of a starburst look with the sun. I did though work to have as much of the sun’s brightness somewhat obscured by this one tree with its limbs and leaves.

I Happened Upon a Horse Grazing While Walking the Boquillas Canyon Trail (Big Bend National Park)

While walking along the Boquillas Canyon Trail and a view looking to the north. With this image, I pulled back on the focal length to have more of a wide angle view with the horse grazing and the backdrop of the mountainside.

Monstrous Earthen Settings Swim in My Mind’s Eye (Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park) by thor_mark 

Monstrous Earthen Settings Swim in My Mind’s Eye (Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park)

A view looking to the northwest across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above at the Rock Point overlook in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I felt angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward would create more of that sweeping look across the canyon with the spires and fissures present. It would also help to minimize what I felt was the more negative space with the blue skies above and have more of the focus with the national park setting to my front.

There's a Real Adventure Out There. One Just Has to Take a Step Forward... (Congaree National Park)

This would have been another of those iconic spots walking along the Boardwalk Loop Trail, but I actually hadn't found any as I prepared myself for this trip to Congaree National Park. It was only on that early Friday morning with few people out that I had a chance just stop and look at this raised boardwalk area and then decide to capture an image. As I'd mention there were very few people on the trail that morning, so I had plenty of time to just sit and get down low with a look across and used the wooden path as a leading line into the image and setting. Composing was then just a matter of lining up the image to have a balanced view on both sides. I later worked with control points and color control points in Capture NX2 to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted. I then added a Foliage and Sunshine CEP filter to give that little bit extra for the final image.

Looking Through The Keyhole and Beyond to Mesas off in the Distance (Black & White, Canyonlands National Park)

A conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

Captured while walking the Confluence Overlook Trail.

A portal one had to walk through on the way to the confluence overlook What I did here was back up and then zoom into the image with a longer focal length. I was then able to keep a more open aperture to capture the far off light on the mesa that was a little darker than the nearby ones caught in the morning light. My idea was to use this as a portal like view to the mesas beyond in the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park.
