Disinformation “National Grid” at the Farsight Collective - HEADPHONES ESSENTIAL

Video documentation of the “National Grid” sound installation by Disinformation, exhibited at the Farsight Collective, London
(11 + 12 October 2024) - HEADPHONES ESSENTIAL

The sensations produced by experiencing the “National Grid” sound installation are produced as much by physical vibration as they are by sound as such, with the effect that the experience is essentially un-recordable. Bear in mind that, therefore, even with headphones, this video offers at best a very crude approximation of the actual experience. NB: the first 30 seconds of this video are silent.

“Art is not necessarily science, but science is always art” [2001-2012] by disinformation

“Art is not necessarily science, but science is always art” [2001-2012]

The quote “while art is not necessarily science, science is always art” first appeared in the introduction to the catalogue for “The Rumble” exhibition, curated by Joe Banks, staged at the Royal Society of Sculptors (formerly Royal Society of British Sculptors), London, March 2001. The quote also appears on page 55 of the book “Rorschach Audio - Art & Illusion for Sound”, published in 2012, in “Shoppinghour” magazine, issue 10, spring 2013, and appears in a booklet entitled “If you could give 200 words worth of advice to a Fine Art student in 2015”, published by the University of Leeds (in conjunction with the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, Pavilion and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park), May 2015...

“The Rumble” exhibition and catalogue were sponsored by the Arts Council England and by the Royal Society of Sculptors. The catalogue also features a commentary entitled “Art & Science - Towards a New Unity” by the art critic Andrew Lambirth. The “Rorschach Audio” monograph was sponsored by the Arts & Humanities Research Council, and produced during an AHRC funded Research Fellowship at Goldsmiths College and the University of Westminster. “The Rumble” catalogue is out-of-print, although available in the library of the Courtauld Institute.

Umberto Eco, Art & Language, Disinformation + Marc Quinn at Kettle’s Yard gallery, Cambridge, 2000

Full page advertisement for the “Noise” exhibition at Kettle’s Yard gallery, Cambridge, Jan to March 2000. “Noise” was curated by (the artist and conservator) Adam Lowe and by (the historian of science) Prof. Simon Schaffer, and featured the “National Grid” sound installation by Disinformation, in the 13th century chapel adjacent to Kettle’s Yard, plus “The Analysis of Beauty” by Disinformation, in the Kettle’s Yard gallery itself.

“The Analysis of Beauty” was exhibited next to a video by the artist Marc Quinn, and directly opposite one of Francis Crick and James Watson’s original working models of DNA. “The Analysis of Beauty” was described as “visually sophisticated’ and “distinctive and intelligent” by Laura Moffat, writing in Art Monthly magazine, and as “particularly sensuous” by Rob Young, writing in The Wire. A short video about (a later version of) “The Analysis of Beauty” installation, as exhibited in the Georgian Gallery at Talbot Rice, Edinburgh, in Nov 2014, can be viewed here…

“Noise” exhibitions ran simultaneously at 4 different venues - at Kettle’s Yard, at the Whipple Museum of the History of Science, and at the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, all in Cambridge, and at the Wellcome Collection gallery on the Euston Road in London. The exhibition was supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Henry Moore Foundation and the University of Cambridge.

The advertisement above was designed by Joe Banks, featuring a photomontage that later re-appeared on cover artwork for the Disinformation “Sense Data & Perception” CD. This advertisement was printed on page 7 of Mute magazine, issue 15, Jan 2000, alongside features by Hari Kunzru and Tom McCarthy. Thanks to Colin Banks, Georgina Brett and Simon Worthington. DIE DIANA – PREMIERE!
Wednesday 29 June, Thursday 30 June, Sunday 3 July, Monday 4 July, Tuesday 5 July, Wednesday 6 July, at 7.30pm. £10 (£8 concessions). Bandit Mugger & Thief, 1 Canal Street, M1 3HE
A dark comedy exploring the afterlife of Princess Diana, the People's Princess, written by Stephen M Hornby. On the twentieth anniversary of her death, three people step out of the shadows and lay claim to her title. Each one has a story to tell about what really happened to her then and since. But who do you believe, if any? And why?
'Die Diana' is hilarious, unnerving and utterly compelling, part homage, part horror show, a play like no other. The cast features Dan Wallace (aka Anna Phylactic, bringing another fabulous drag creation to life, Die Anna); Emily Heyworth (also appearing in Welcome to Paradise Road) and Ciaran Wilson (a drama teacher in Burnley who is in his first production since graduating from ALRA North).
Stephen M Hornby, national playwright in residence to LGBT history month. NEW WRITING, COMEDY, THEATRE, LGBT @inkbrew #DieDiana
