Vintage German postcard. Ross Verlag, 9270/1. Bavaria Film/ Vandor Film. Hans Albers and Annabella in Varieté (Nicolas Farkas, 1935). This was the German alternate-language version of Variétés (Farkas, 1935) with Jean Gabin and Annabella. The plot was a remake of E.A Dupont's classic film from 1925, starring Emil Jannings and Lya de Putti.
Hans Albers (1891-1960) was a superstar of German cinema between 1930 and 1945, after a long career as the slick, womanizing antagonist in the silent era. Memorable leads Albers had in the German late Weimar and early sound era, e.g. in Bomben auf Monte Carlo (1931), FP1 antwortet nicht (1932), Quick (1932) and Ein gewisser Herr Gran (1933), while under nazi rule he starred in films such as Gold (1934), Der Mann, der Sherlock Holmes war (1937) and Münchhausen (1943). He was also one of the most famous German singers of the twentieth century.
French film star Annabella (1909-1996) was France's most popular actress during the mid-1930s, but she also achieved some success in Hollywood films of the late 1930s.
