The building was built between 1236 and 1254 and is an early - if not the first - example of the spread in Italy of the new taste from beyond the Alps: French Gothic. The façade is still influenced by the Po Valley Romanesque style with its gabled structure, but both the windows and the main entrance are made in the new style. The basilica has two bell towers. The one built first is smaller and simpler, while the second one, built to a design by Antonio di Vincenzo (1397), is monumental and rich in decorative elements.
