Wandering the streets in Colonia Roma we spotted Casa Universitaria del Libro (CASUL) - UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico)
CASUL:
The structure was built for Don Joaquín Baranda MacGregor and his wife Doña Dolores Luján Zuloaga.
2020 it celebrates 100 years of its construction and 34 years of its inauguration as a university house.
Construction started in 1920, when the Roma neighborhood became an area that housed families from different cultures, something that would place it as one of the most desirable neighborhoods for residents of higher social status.
Its architecture is distinguished by having styles that predominated at that time such as Art Nouveau, Art Déco and eclectic.
The house was completed in 1925 and despite the expectations it created, it was not occupied until 1929.
From 1940 to 1945 the house was occupied by the Brazilian Embassy as Mr. Baranda died in 1941 at the age of 63.
In April 1945 Dolores Luján widow of Baranda sold the residence to the Asturian Center of Mexico AC and the house was used for the social and cultural activities of the Center, transforming the rooms into rooms for dominoes, billiards, bowling alley, dance hall, banquets, auditorium and restaurant.
In 1985 the Austrian Embassy moved to Colonia Polanco.
October 22, 1986, Adolfo Graña Reguera, president of the Center; José Manuel García Rodríguez, secretary; and Jorge Carpizo, rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, signed a loan contract whereby the Asturian Center gave the University the use of the house for 10 years.
On December 10, 1986 , the University Book House was formally inaugurated with the assistance of Lic. Jorge Madrazo, Coordinator of Humanities and Miguel González Avelar, Secretary of Public Education.
August 2018, Casa Universitaria del Libro became part of the Coordination of Cultural Diffusion and amplified its activities, becoming a meeting place for writers, editors, painters, poets, researchers and readers, assuming the commitment to link more closely with the society in general and act as a forum for expression of the sectors of the population of the work of the Coordination of Cultural Diffusion, thus participating in the professional and comprehensive training of different sectors.
