"Don Birnam's five days, after his brother Wick leaves for a long weekend, are one long shocking revelation of the man himself -- his fantasies, his memories of childhood, and the promise of his youth, his persistent infantilism, his loneliness, his need to drink (always his need to drink), his alcoholic distortions of reality, his craftiness and remorse, splintered personal relationships with his brother and with his girl, and the solitary horror within himself . . ." [From the novel's introduction]
This novel about the devastating effects of alcoholism was the basis of an Academy Award winning film released in 1945, directed by Billy Wilder, and starring Ray Milland.

The layout of this memorial initially confused me – I thought the break out from alphabetical order of the last few days were as a result of the later identification of Great War casualties associated with Brantham. It was not helped that on the first panel , the first name listed has a better candidate for inclusion from the Great War rather than WW2. However it soon became clear that these later names – starting with Amoss on this panel, were actually men from Brantham who died in WW2.
It also became clear that men from nearby Cattawade were also remembered on this Memorial. This is also probably due to the role the British Xylonite Company played in the local economy - apparently there are memorials elsewhere in Brantham dedicated to both the fallen and those who served. For more on that see the following:-

Charles Jackson, borough surveyor.
Monmouth Cemetery was opened in 1851 on land bought from the 7th Duke of Beaufort after the council closed the churchyard in St Mary's Priory Church due to putrefying corpses sticking out of the ground causing a health hazard to nearby residents; a common scenario by the 19th Century. It was consecrated on 25 June 1852, the first burial taking place two days later. It was used for burials between 1852 and 2012. It has a small chapel of rest which today, is a genealogy centre. One grave of note is that of Sergeant WW Allan, 24th Regiment of Foot who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the Defence of Rorke's Drift in 1879.

Jennifer Lynn (Kestel) Deist Obituary 2
January 1, 1957 ~ February 13, 2017 age 60 60 Years Old
Jennifer Deist passed away peacefully at her home in Eddyville, KY, on February 13, 2017, with her two sons Aaron and Bryan, husband Bob, and hospice caregivers at her side.
Jennifer was born on January 1, 1957 at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, IA. She continued to reside in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 1975. Following high school, she moved to Sioux City and enrolled at Iowa Tech School of Nursing where she graduated in 1976 with a license in Practical Nursing. Upon graduation she worked in Storm Lake, IA, and then in Des Moines, IA, where she met and married her first husband.
Jennifer was a caring and dedicated nurse who worked in Iowa, Hawaii, Florida, California, and Illinois in a variety of medical facilities. She was loved by her co-workers. Her patients were fortunate to have benefitted from her professional commitment and service. She married her husband Bob in 2003. They lived in Alton, IL, and finally at Lake Barkley, KY, in a home they designed, built, and decorated. She left the nursing profession in 2002 due to physical complications resulting from multiple sclerosis. She was an avid reader and was very skilled at knitting and crocheting. Both sides of her family were loving recipients of her handcrafted work over the years. Her work was sought out by gift shops and businesses, but Jennifer preferred to give away or donate her work rather than profit from it. She was also a great supporter of animal rescue and pet adoption programs. She loved her two dogs; Charley, a three year old labradoodle and Briggs, a seven year old pompoo.
Jennifer is survived by her mother Jean Ann (Miller) Kestel of Ames, IA. Also surviving are two wonderful sons from her first marriage, Aaron Call and his wife Nicole and two exceptional grandchildren, Mina Charles Call (age 5) and Franklin Verdell Call (age 3) from St. Paul, MN, and son Bryan Richard Call and his longtime girlfriend Loren Hill, who live in Louisville, KY. She also leaves a sister, Barbi Greenlaw, and brother-in-law Reggie Greenlaw of Ames, IA, as well as her nephew Ryan living in Washington, D.C., and niece Bryna Greenlaw Halloran and her husband Michael Halloran in Amana, IA.
Jennifer was stepmother to her husband Bob’s three sons and their families: Brian and Amy Deist, Mallory, David, Karley, and Clint of Kane, IL; Brad Deist and partner Megan, Dora, Delaney, Bradley and Jack of Kane, IL; and Daniel and Allison Deist, Ella, Katie and Ava of Kane, IL. She is also survived by her loving husband Bob, who continues to reside in their Lake Barkley home in Eddyville, KY. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Jonathan Richard Kestel, and her father, Richard Albert Kestel, who passed away April 15, 2011.
Memorial donations in Jennifer’s honor may be made to the National MS Society (national MSsociety.org), the American Cancer Society (cancer.org), or a recipient of one’s choice.
At Jennifer’s request her body was cremated at Smith Funeral Home in Smithland, KY, and her remains were passed to her husband and two sons. A memorial service will be held on March 4, 2017 at 3:30 P.M. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship located at 2015 N. Hyland Ave., Ames, Iowa.
