COMMA 9

Chrysalis of a Comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album. 18 March 2025. Photographed in my garden, Ealing, London, England, UK.

The chrysalis is almost certainly dead - but I'll keep an eye on it, just in case. The time to see a Comma chrysalis in the UK is June and August.

Lining up the chrysalis cases for optimal hatching

From the safety and environmentally controlled hatching wagon to exiting to the larger space of the tropical greenhouse, the universe that the butterflies explore is relatively small, compared to their chances out in the wild at their native countries.

The chrysalides in which the larvae of the large tree nymph (Idea leuconoe), also known as the paper kite butterfly, are something of a packaging miracle. It doesn't show in this shot because we have nothing for scale, but these are quite small chrysalides and yet the butterfly is a large species. Somehow these guys have found a way to fit more wings inside the package.

Once they have hatched and unfolded their wings, they will look like this: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52869460382/

Lace Underneath - _TNY_0586

From yesterday's (February 6th, 2025) visit to the Haga Ocean butterfly house, here is a red lacewing (Cethosia biblis).

This is in my opinion a very striking species, hailing from Asia and this particular one here has just crawled out of its chrysalis, unfolded its wings and was waiting for them to harden enough that it could make its first flight.

Wing (Wo)Man - _TNY_0573

These are a pair of female Low's swallowtails (Papilio lowii), also known as the incredibly vague "Asian swallowtail" and also the great yellow mormon.

Normally, they aren't particularily, but looking at them here, when they are brand new and still waiting for their wings to harden enough for their first flight, the wings really look quite yellow. Apparently, the yellow must fade a bit. Compare it to this one which is significantly less yellow (but still great): www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52610765549/
