People patiently posing outside Portstewart, Post Office by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

People patiently posing outside Portstewart, Post Office

Quite a group of people standing outside the Post Office in Portstewart in County Derry while the numbers diminish as they eye moves along the street. Mr. French had the capacity to attract people to his work and children in particular, but on occasions, no doubt due to a lack of juicy bones, he has been ignored by the dogs of the towns he visited!

A stitch in time and help with "Hogg 9" by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

A stitch in time and help with "Hogg 9"

Out catalogue title is as follows “Maghera Embroidery School, Belfast. Child at pump. Hogg 9” which gives us a few avenues to investigate. I think the name Glendinning is on the plaque above the door? The “Hogg 9” intrigues me I wonder where it came from and what it means? I love the stance of the young girl at the pump she is “rolling up the sleeves” and ready to pump, I think she is being directed?

Big Cats on the Rocks by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Big Cats on the Rocks

A massive set of gate pillars surmounted by two big cats guard the entrance to what look a very institutional style building in the grounds. Castlerock in Co. Sligo is not a place that I am familiar with but hopefully I will be enlightened by the end of the day?

Trains and boats but no planes in Waterside by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Trains and boats but no planes in Waterside

The Waterside in Derry, a city divided by a river and a significant history along with a whole lot more to boot. Here we have a view of the port with some of the city in the background. While I could work my way around Derry city centre I could not tell if the Waterside is the other side of the river or on the nearside?

The Mill where the Dog Leaps by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

The Mill where the Dog Leaps

The photographers visit to the Spinning Mill at Limavady was obviously a significant event! The boys and girls sat and stood still, the adults likewise and the workers at the mill came out to watch the proceedings! What are things like there now.

Remembering in Derry by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Remembering in Derry

Derry is a place of great history and much need for remembrance and so a "Memorial Hall" seems very appropriate. What do we know about this hall and if it still stands what is it used for now?

Shirtings, Sheetings and Flannels by National Library of Ireland on The Commons

Shirtings, Sheetings and Flannels

We continue to follow Mr. French on his perambulations throughout the island and from Warrenpoint up along the Ulster coast to Coleraine in County Derry. The people don't appear to have had much interest in the photographer as there is much movement captured, especially close up. looking at all the debris along the gutter perhaps there was a market on the street earlier?
