The massive, let agile and attractive, Arrowhead Spiketail (Cordulegaster obliqua obliqua) males working Spiketail Creek could not bring more joy to my soul.
These Maryland listed threatened species (S2) are not at all common on the Refuge and the adults are only on the wing during the first couple weeks of June.
Patuxent Research Refuge, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

We had seen 2 of these rare spiketails flying with Swamp darners recently - then had 2 perch on 5-29-22. This female kept returning to perch in front of us - finally letting me take her in my hand (I'll post later). This southern subspecies is very large (3.5+ inches long) with turquoise eyes.
We also saw a foty Dragonhunter that day, Sanddragons, and a foty Blackwater clubtail. Big dragon day! @ the wetlands, North Georgia
I didn't think I was going to see an Arrowhead this year - and it's the latest I've seen one. I went to the wetlands in-between rainstorms yesterday to shoot Halloween pennants. As I was leaving, this big dark dragonfly flew out of the cattail slough and looked a lot like a Swamp darner laterally. But something was off, so I followed it. Then it perched! It actually posed for me for 9 minutes - re-perching low several times and letting me get within about 3 feet. It's FINDING them that's hard!
@ the wetlands, North Georgia, yesterday - 3.5 inches long and rare
