One of the largest predators on Madagascar, the fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) could easily be mistaken for a small cougar with its round ears and cat-like body. It’s genus name (Cryptoprocta) means “hidden in the hind parts”, referring to its anal pouch which secretes a strong-smelling fluid. The second part of its scientific name (ferox) refers to its fierce reputation. Remarkably, this species is both terrestrial and arboreal and is an excellent climber moving through the trees with ease.
The fossa has short, retractable claws which aid in its tree climbing. As the top predator species, it has keen hearing, vision, and sense of smell and marks its territory with secretions. It is largely nocturnal and requires a wide range of undisturbed forest to live and hunt. This species preys on birds, wild pigs, frogs, rodents and lizards and is the only predator that can kill large lemurs due to its speed and camouflage.
Endangered due to human-animal conflict, being hunted to protect livestock, habitat loss and 90% reduced range due to logging. The current population is about 2500 left in the wild. – Internet
