Bernard Shawsingel | Dolingadreef 30/04/2023 16h50
In a green strip west of the Dolingadreef near the Drostenburg Bridge and along the Bernard Shawsingel in Amsterdam-Zuidoost there is an untitled artistic work of art made of stainless steel.
Jos Kokke's work, which dates from 1990, was colloquially given the title Baken because of its form. The meaning of the image is described in two ways.
The image is said to be Kokke's modern vision of obelisks along broad roads in Paris. It points to the sky. The broad street plan in the nearby Venserpolder district inspired the artist. The popular interpretation is less poetic. They see a ship's mast with a crow's nest and an ironed storm ball. This could then refer to the Bijlmermeer as a lake before it was drained.
The statue is located on the spot where the Daalwijkdreef ran until around 1980; this part was cleared to allow the Venserpolder district to be fully developed.
