There are two sets of Docking Stations on Eccles Street. This one is located at the Berkeley Road end of the street.

The architecture of Eccles Street reflected the political, economic and Architectural concerns of Dublin Society from 1700 to 1900 so it is well worth a visit.

CIE - A Rapid Transit System for Dublin, leaflet, c1980

Dublin, having almost completely turned its back on tramways and railways in the 1950s and '60s (in common with most other European cities) did start in the late '70s to investigate systems of rail based rapid transit - this is a leaflet from the period that looked at some of the early proposals for the city including the ever-threatened underground section int he city centre. Various parts of these proposals did come to pass - but as separate entities - the popular electrification of the north - south suburban rail services as DART, and some elements of the western Dublin proposals effectively delivered as part of LUAS. There is still the 'missing link' - now known as Metro North and Metro West - now, again, deferred.

The map shows the early proposals to cover the city centre, Greystones and Howth (now DART), Tallaght and Ronanstown, Blanchardstown and Ballymun. The illustrations show sleek underground subway trains with interchanges to what look alarmingly like D-class double deckers and C-class coaches!
