Jeffreys Cordial Factory

The factory was established in 1876 in McPherson Street, Casterton, which is still its present site, by Ben Jeffreys using bottling equipment shipped out from England. He operated it until 1903 when his two sons took over, adopting the trade name "Jeffrey Bros". In 1946 Mr Bill Young purchased a third share in the firm and held it until 1956 when he sold it back to the Jeffreys family.
Graeme Jeffreys, a grand-son of Ben Jeffreys, then joined the firm making this the third generation of Jeffreys to be associated with the business. He originated the sales name "Big J" and introduced a 30oz bottle using his grand-father's initials "B.J". The firm remained in the family until 1969 when it was purchased by Messrs. Phillips and Johnson, who up until the present time [1973] still trade under the name of Jeffreys Bros.

Jack Phillips and 'Kiwi' Johnson also purchased the Portland Aerated Water Company and 'Kiwi' moved to Portland to run the business whilst Jack Phillips remained in Casterton to run Jeffreys Bros. Jack was a former Casterton policeman.

passengers no more

Although I bought this two years ago, it's only now I finally got round to scanning it in. Taken eight months after it closed to passengers, this is Liverpool Exchange station. Passing the disused terminus is a Ford Granada...probably of the same age as NHK 295M, the car that appears in a certain police drama series that finished that year.

The two dirty great big arches that you can just about see led to the taxi rank, not to mention being an entrance to the station. The porte-cochere a bit further down was the entrance to the station's hotel, which closed in July 1971.

For those who wanted to explore, much of the station was still intact, what with being used as a car park, not to mention being a den for local kids. In the charts that month were Brotherhood of Man (whose line-up was based roughly on a certain Swedish foursome) with Figaro and Abba with Take A Chance On Me.

Like Althia & Donna before them, they only spent a week at number one whereas the Swedes occupied the top spot for a good three weeks - both songs I remember with fondness...especially as it was coming up to my seventh birthday on 9 March. Also in the top ten was Bill Withers with Lovely Day and glam rock group Sweet with their last hit Love Is Like Oxygen, although by now they were just a normal rock group.

Grand Opening… Oops, we’re closed! by Roy Prasad

Grand Opening… Oops, we’re closed!

Since returning to a Leica M camera, first with an M10 Monochrom, then later, switching to my current M11 two years ago, I have taken a lot of test shots to both re-learn my rangefinder skills, and also to test different lenses. Until now I had not bothered to publish them, since there was nothing really exotic about them. It’s not like I visited some amazing place or saw some interesting people or whatever.

But then I realized these photos might be of interest to people who are considering buying the same lens I used to take them. So if there is some value to others, then why not put them up on Flickr…

Please don’t feel compelled to comment… Most of these images are for informational purposes, so people get a sense for how a specific lens renders. Some of the photos are of the same scene, shot with different lenses, typically on different days.

Hope they are useful…

Sad Wood Anemones

A lot of rain and no sunshine today so these wood anemones didn’t bother to come out, I know how they feel, if only I could curl up like this sometimes and avoid the world.
