Les Peupliers
or Maison Guiette (1926-1927)
Populierenlaan 32
2020 Antwerpen
Belgium
arch Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, known as Le Corbusier (1887-1965) (with Paul Smekens)
restoration and extension at Nr 34 by Georges Baines
Unesco World Heritage since 2016 : "The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement"
Sole remaining building of Le Corbusier in Belgium (since the temporary Philips pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World Fair was dismantled).
Built for the modernist painter René Guiette as a home and painter's atelier.
Local architect supervising the original construction for LC was Paul(us) Smekens (BEL, Antwerp, June 22 1890 - Oct 15 1983).
When renowned Belgian minimalist fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester, one of the so-called Antwerp Six, bought the house for herself in 1983 it was in a dire state, completely derelict and virtually unrecognizable as a LC, being entirely covered in unsightly slate cladding added not long after WWII since the initial Granilis-type facade rendering technique proved no good and was letting the humidity seep deep into the walls which made the house unlivable.
She eventually sought the help of the very talented modernist architect Georges Baines (BEL, Berchem, 7 May 1925 - Antwerp, 22 May 2013) for the restoration, which occurred between 1987-88. Baines added a really nice and respectful extension next door in 1993 to house the atelier of the fashion house.
The facades are both rendered but the Baines extension went for a contrasting blue colour to the impeccable white for the original LC house.
Since Ann Demeulemeester retired from her fashion house, the Guiette house is now occupied by her son.
Since the private house cannot be visited it may be worth your while to also take a look at the large restoration model (1987) from the archives of Georges Baines, which shows the interior and its colour scheme as used by LC and reapplied during restoration.
